Interview with singer Garbage Queen

Music producer Garbage Queen is the madness, darkness and nonsense. When she began to exist the world changed forever. Garbage Queen was born and raised in Poland and has since moved to the United Kingdom in 2015. She fell in love with music when, as a child, she was watching her mother rehearsing for her own recitals. She is a classically trained violinist, piano-player, vocalist and songwriter.

‘Reflection’ is Garbage Queen’s first official single, a magical amalgamation of post-punk, theatrical rock and madness. ‘Reflection’ is a rollercoaster that will take the listener on a dark, yet a fanciful journey through Garbage Queen’s creative, brooding soul. Using an array of vocal talents, quirky songwriting skills and a full-force band.

How has your musical background helped shaped your sound?

I started playing the violin when I was 4 years old. Since I was a little child music was an important part of my life. I remember being obsessed with Chopin when I was little. Classical training provides me with a lot of tools but also created a lot of boundaries in my head. I guess that’s the reason why my songwriting is a bit quirky. It is a mix of following rules and trying to break them at the same time.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

Usually, the main idea will emerge in my head out of nowhere, I record little melodies, write down lyrics. I let the idea rest for a few days and then sit down and expand it. Sometimes the process is really quick, other times it takes more effort. Usually I ‘draw’ the song. I think about dynamics, hooks, the way I want to start and end the song. I consider the listener’s emotions and the message I want to send across.

Who are three musicians you think the world needs to hear right now?

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

I think about the big picture when creating music and studio forces you to take the piece apart and analyse each single note. It is a hermetic environment, dissociated from real life. I find it easier to perform, where I get instant responses from the audience. The energy is floating around the room and music becomes something bigger.

Any “strange tales” or things that may have happened during a show that seemed too weird to be true?

I performed in Poland in a small art gallery that was situated outside the local church. In the middle of my performance, some of the older priests joined the performance while I was singing a cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Disco Stick’ as well as a few other spicy numbers. They all seemed really entertained and were nice to me after the performance. I like to believe that they were liberal and open-minded priests who understood English perfectly!

Do you find that social media and keeping up with your fans has become overwhelming? Or do you rely heavily on others to take care of that for the band? Which platform would you say that you enjoy engaging with the most?

I do manage all of my social media myself. I find it’s so amazing to be able to keep in touch with fans and other musicians. I always encourage people to message me! I personally love using Instagram. I do have a quirky way of seeing the world and I like to play with silly filters etc Still, my favourite tool to edit pictures and make them look ridiculous is good old’ Paint!

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

Every single one of them is so memorable and important to me. I love talking to people after the show. I value each one of those conversations when I know I made people feel things. It gives me the energy to keep going.
